Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge

Picture
Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, go to Grimaldi’s for pizza, or to the River Café for a more elegant meal or drink with a great view, walk over to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade for great views of Manhattan, then take the subway back.

Click on this link from your smartphone (mobile data required), open the link with the Google Map App, and you can see where you are (with the blue Google Maps arrow) in relation to the map with all of the stops and the route noted.

Or print this page and take it with you. You may want to click on the "Open a full sized map" button below, zoom in on the map and print different sections for greater legibility.

1.  Start at the Brooklyn Bridge Subway Stop (4 or 5 train).

2.  Turn around and look at the small park behind you.  The building closest to you is the NY City Hall, originally completed in 1812.

3.  Just across the Centre Street you'll see a ramp for cars to enter the Brooklyn Bridge, with a sidewalk. Walk along the sidewalk for a few feet until the pedestrian walkway branches off to the right.  Follow the walkway across the bridge, staying in the pedestrian lane to avoid being hit by bicyclists.

4.  At the Brooklyn end of the walkway you will see stairs leading down to the left, take them.  Make a left at the bottom of the stairs and a left on Prospect Street.  Make a right at the end on Old Fulton St.  Walk under the highway, and Grimaldi's will be on your right (1 Front St.).  If there is a long line for a table, consider walking to the back of the restaurant (or calling ahead 718-858-4300) and ordering pies to go.  You can continue walking down Old Fulton St. and there are picnic tables in the park where you can enjoy your pie. Cash only.

5.  If you still have room after Grimaldi's you can visit The Ice Cream Factory (1 Water St. at the foot of Old Fulton St.)

6.  If you more in the mood (and better dressed) for an elegant dinner or a cocktail (or if you need a taxi back to Manhattan) a little further towards the water is The River Cafe.  Killer views of the downtown skyline in a romantic atmosphere.

7.  If you are not dressed for romance, make a left on Columbia Heights and a few blocks down the pedestrian path to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade will be on your right.  Follow it along the Promenade for the same killer views as the River Cafe, but free of charge.  At the end of the Promenade follow Remsen Street to the end to catch the 4 or 5 subway back to Manhattan (or see the map for locations of stations for the N/R or 2/3).
